moroom

moroom is an innovative method of offering architectural services and products to our domestic clients; offered exclusively by SIX AD.

The concept of moroom reaches back almost as far as the founding of SIX AD.  The name 'moroom' is a contraction of MOdular ROOMs, however it's also a description of what's on offer, i.e. more room.  In this feature, we'll explore the development to date, of our moroom concept.

Origin

Shortly after SIX AD was registered as a limited company in 2009, we started discussing the need for a practice website; we very quickly produced the 'holding page' that served us well for over two years.  In considering our strategy for the development and roll-out of our new website, we spent a lot of time thinking about the opportunities that were available to us.

What is it that we're really offering our clients?  What is it that our clients want from us?  How do our contemporaries offer their services?  How well do they do it?  Is this an opportunity for us to do more than just showcase our design abilities?  Is this an opportunity for us to offer architectural services to our clients in a more relevant way?

It was obvious that there were opportunities open to us for the SIX AD website to be more that just a source of information about our practice, but also a hub of resources for our clients and colleagues in the construction industry.

We undertook an analytical study of the methods and mechanisms by which clients procure architectural and building services on small scale projects, what services and solutions they are seeking and what can be done to streamline the engagement process for clients as well as SIX AD.

The original moroom concept was a methodology for making our pre-appointment services more legible and accessible to the consumer market.  This solution is still under development and will be launched via this website in the coming months.  The foundations for that forthcoming service are embedded in this new version of the SIX AD website, so watch this space!

Development

The moroom strategy now covers two main areas of development; [1] 'pre-packaged' architectural services and [2] modular building systems.  Our partners in the development of the modular building systems are Wombat Construction.

While the moroom architectural services are still under development, the modular building systems are ready to be rolled out as a prototype.  We refer to the building system as moroom+ as it has been designed to exceed every statutory expectation of performance for a new building, or extension to an existing building.

System

The moroom+ system utilises the Pavatex range of building products, distributed in the UK by Natural Building Technologies (NBT).  In consultation with Wombat and NBT, SIX AD have developed a system of moroom+ components, that allow for a bespoke timber framed building to be designed and quickly assembled, based around a modular unit size of 600mm.

Advantages

The moroom+ system offers a scaleable timber-framed solution at a domestic scale in the following applications  :

  • new-build
  • extensions
  • garden rooms

The external elements of the building are highly insulated, providing savings on energy costs; the building fabric itself is breathable, reducing moisture build-up and providing a healthier environment.

The core construction of the external walls provides the structure, thermal envelope and weather seal.  The external skin functions as a decorative rainscreen and can be specified to suit the clients requirements, in timber, masonry or rendered panels for instance.

More details on moroom+ will be available soon.   If you would like to learn more, please get in touch via our contact page, or at enquiries@six-ad.com.
