Reception Desk Design | Velocity Village | Sheffield
A feature piece in the recently completed HQ for a prominent Sheffield based client, the reception desk was designed to create a lasting impression.
Introduction
![]()
In November 2009, SIX AD was presented with an opportunity to develop a reception area for a corporate client. The reception area would include a new reception desk; through consultation with the Client and in collaboration with HWDesign and Interior Surfaces Ltd, SIX AD produced a functional, elegant and minimal design, that embodied our Client’s aspirations as a forward looking multi-disciplinary practice.
Challenges + Opportunities
The reception desk had to incorporate a number of practical details and overcome a number of technical challenges. The desk had to allow a member of staff to operate as a receptionist while also offering a fully functional work station. The staff and visitor in / out procedures also had to be managed from the desk, in addition to the intercom and telephony reception duties.
The existing procedures adopted by the Client were traditional and therefore bound in maintaining hard-copy records of all documents and procedures. The successful deployment of the envisaged reception desk required that more contemporary technologies be endorsed by senior management and adopted by reception staff.
Design

The reception desk was designed to embody the core professions of the Client, in Engineering, Project Management and Cost Consultancy. We distilled these skillsets to essential components of accuracy, functionality and simplicity.
The desk itself is intended to present a single and cohesive point of arrival, as a monolithic form, with a matching side desk at a lower level. The white Corian
facing material extends the 'simple' concept, while the shadow gap beaneath the desk is intended to imply an engineering mastery over the the material.
The LED illuminated front and side panel are matched by the translucent Corian back panel. The RGB LEDs in the back panel are mixed in a control box to provide the selected colour - in this case the corporate blue of the Client. The Corian back panel also has the Client name etched in to the surface to provide a stronger wash of the back-lit colour, due to the thinner Corian in the region of the corporate logo.
